SBFC Finance Ltd. (SFL) is a significant non-banking financial company in India that does not accept deposits. The company specializes in providing loans, particularly focusing on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) loans with collateral, as well as loans against gold, catering to ticket sizes ranging from Rs. 5 lakhs to Rs. 30 lakhs. As of March 31, 2023, SFL has an extensive presence in 120 cities across 16 Indian States and two Union Territories, supported by 152 branches.
SFL stands out among MSME-focused NBFCs in India due to its impressive growth in Assets Under Management (AUM). According to a CRISIL Report, its AUM has grown at a remarkable Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 44% from Fiscal Year 2019 to Fiscal Year 2023. Moreover, SFL has experienced robust disbursement growth, with a CAGR of 40% between Fiscal Year 2021 and Fiscal Year 2023, as per the same CRISIL Report. However, there remains a significant challenge, as only about 16.9 million MSMEs have registered on UDYAM as of June 20, 2023, leaving a vast number of around 70 million unregistered MSMEs in India without access to organized finance.
The company primarily serves customers in tier II and tier III cities, with a notable customer base of 102,722 individuals as of March 31, 2023. SFL’s average cost of borrowing was 8.11% in Fiscal Year 2021, 7.65% in Fiscal Year 2022, and 8.22% in Fiscal Year 2023. Its Net Interest Margin (NIM) showed a declining trend, raising concerns, with NIM figures being 11.73% in FY21, 9.39% in FY22, and 9.32% in FY23.
As of March 31, 2023, SFL employed a total of 2,822 individuals, out of which 1,911 were engaged in sales-related roles. The company had a considerable portfolio of MSME loan accounts, with 40,872 live accounts and 34,738 active MSME borrowers on record.
